Smithing
Training Guide
The first step in making your own armor or weapons is to smelt your ore into bars. To do this, you will need to use one of the many furnaces located throughout Gielinor. Take your ore obtained via Mining or from the Grand Exchange and click a furnace. This will enable you to deposit all ores from within your inventory into the Metal Bank - Far Left side of the window shown below. This bank will enable you to avoid bank runs when creating any items as you can deposit all ores (excluding Corrupted ore) into it. Once ores have been added, you will then be able to select to desired bars to create in the middle section. The far Right section provides information about levels required and experience gained as well as how many you can make per session - note that bars will still go to your inventory after being made so you will need to add to your Metal Bank if desired.

You can also use magic to smelt your bars if that is more your style. This is done by using the level 43 spell "Superheat Item" spell. It requires 1 Nature rune and 4 Fire runes to cast this spell.
When smelting ores into bars, you will be limited to your inventory space for the maximum amount you can create in any given session as bars will show up there. If you desire to have them automatically show up in your metal bank upon creation, you will need to be wearing Smithing gauntlets - at that point you will be able to make up to 60 bars per session.
At various levels you will earn the ability to smelt the bars faster and eventually make more than 1 bar at a time. This ability can stack, thus allowing you to create up to 32 bars at once - note there is a 0.001% chance of this occurring. The highest ore that will have an "extra bar chance" is Primal bar at level 108.
In addition to smelting bars, many items are created by casting at a furnace. These items mostly consist of Jewelry, but in addition to those, the following items can be cast depending upon your Smithing level. Note that you will need to select a bar presented under "Casting Metals" (on the far Left) for the casting options to appear in the middle window.

The next, and final, step to making your own armor/weapons is to use an anvil. By clicking on an anvil, you will be able to see how many of each type bar you have (far Left of the window) and then choose what item of that material you wish to make (middle of the window). The far Right section of the window provides you with information about how much experience you will gain, how many can be made that session, and any requirements to make it as well as letting you choose how many of that item you wish to make.

When you begin creating the item, you will see an Unfinished smithing item appear in your inventory. If you hover over this item you will see the following window:

- Item being created - Tells you what it will become.
- Current heat - Higher heat means you smith the item faster. See Heating section for more details.
- Current progress - Each item needs a certain amount of work to become complete. This raises as the tier of bar does.
- Experience left in item - Lets you know how much more experience is left in making the item.
As you are smithing an item, you will notice 2 bars above your head. The top one shows your progress on the item's completion and the bottom bar denotes the current Heat of the item. It is possible to leave the anvil and return to creating an item later. Hitting an anvil with an Unfinished smithing item in your inventory will cause you to automatically return to building that project. Leaving an anvil and returning later will not affect any of your progress unless you have visited a Heat forge before returning. Note that Forges are found near most, if not all, anvils in game.
This mechanic is only available to those at level 10 Smithing or higher.
When smithing items, you may have noticed that as your heat level decreases, that it seems to be taking longer to create your item. This is because the heat of your item greatly influences how fast you can smith an item. The heat value that your item starts at is determined by your Maximum heat value as well as your current Smithing level. Your skill level makes a difference since you must be of a certain level before you will start an Unfinished smithing item at 100% heat. Your heat value is determined by the following formula:
So for an example, someone with 86 Smithing and 90 Firemaking would calculate as such:
300 + ( 86 X 3 ) + ( 90 X 3 ) = 828 maximum heat value per item
Note that it will only take levels up to 99 into account. So the maximum heat value possible is 894.
As mentioned earlier, the heat on your Unfinished smithing item will decrease as you are making it. It will degrade 10% per hit. To keep your item at a warmer temperature, you will need to heat it on a nearby forge. It will take up to 6 ticks to increase from 0%-100% heat. See the table below for the speed at which an Unfinished smithing item is created depending on the heat.
| Heat Level | Heat % | Progress Multiplier | Progress Per Strike |
| High | 67%-100% | x2 | 20 |
| Medium | 34%-66% | x1.5 | 15 |
| Low | 1%-33% | x1 | 10 |
| Zero | 0% | x0.5 | 5 |
To help keep your items warmer, a Smithing autoheater and the Superheat Form curse can be used.
When creating items on an anvil you may have noticed that they can be upgraded up to +5. The number of times that a piece or armor or weapon can be upgraded depends upon the metal tier the item is composed of. Note that Bronze is the only tier that cannot be upgraded.
| Upgrades | Metal |
| 1 | Iron and Steel |
| 2 | Mithril and Adamant |
| 3 | Rune and Orikalkum |
| 4 | Necronium and Bane |
| 5 | Elder rune |
Upgrading your items requires the previous tier item that you created and twice the number of bars that have been used. This being the case, you cannot automatically create a +5 item.
| Base Bars | Bars Per Upgrade | Total Bars for +5 | Item Types | ||||
| +1 | +2 | +3 | +4 | +5 | |||
| 1 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 8 | 16 | 32 | Boots, Gauntlets |
| 2 | 2 | 4 | 8 | 16 | 32 | 64 | Battleaxe, Claws, Full helm, Hatchet, Helm, Longsword, Mace, Pickaxe, Scimitar, Shields, Sword, Warhammer |
| 3 | 3 | 6 | 12 | 24 | 48 | 96 | Platelegs, Plateskirt |
| 4 | 4 | 8 | 16 | 32 | 64 | 128 | 2h sword |
| 5 | 5 | 10 | 20 | 40 | 80 | 160 | Chainbody, Platebody |

If you have completed the Smithing portion of Barbarian training, you will be able to smith your own spears and hastas. Refer to the table below for the exact level and item requirements to make these.
Note: You will not be able to make a hasta until you demonstrate to Otto that you can make a spear.
You can only make these items inside the dungeons of Daemonheim and will not be able to take them outside of the dungeon! Unlike with ordinary Smithing, Dungeoneering Smithing does not have any bells and whistles. When creating items on anvils, you do NOT need to worry about Heat.
Within the walls of Daemonheim ores can be smelted into the following bars:
The tables below show the experience and items you can make while training Smithing within the Dungeoneering skill.

The Artisans Workshop can be found in South East Falador, next to the Mining Guild. The Workshop offers a variety of ways to train Smithing and rewards for doing so. Please see our Artisan's Workshop Special Report for more details.

Another more exciting training method is to participate in the Blast Furnace minigame. As it is a team effort to make everything run smoothly, it is suggested that you are on a popular world. The Blast Furnace is located under a building at South East area of Keldagrim, North of the mine-carts.

For more information, please see our Blast Furnace minigame guide.
Within the game, some armors and weapons can become degraded. If they simply degrade to damaged, the item can be repaired either on an armour stand in your Workshop, Bob in Lumbridge, Dunstan in Burthorpe, Tindel in Port Khazard, or at the Void Knight Outpost. Repairing items in your Home costs less than at one of these people.
To repair something, you will need to bring both your damaged item and some Coins to any armor repair stand. The value paid to repair an item is based on your own smithing level. To calculate the amount of Coins you will save, simply divide your smithing level by 2. For example, if you had a smithing level of 50, you would simple divide by 2, resulting in a savings of 25%.
Some armor & weapons that are repairable include:
| Barrows equipment | Golden Barrows equipment | Noxious weaponry | Drygore weaponry | ||||
| Superior Ports armor | Ancient equipment | Ascencion crossbows | Siesmic wand and singularity |

Once you have achieved level 99, you may visit Thurgo to purchase a Smithing cape for 99,000 Coins.

Once you have achieved level 120, Thurgo will sell you the Smithing master cape for 120,000 Coins.
Discount
Note that as of December 2018, another one of Mod Daze's Easter Eggs have been found. This enables you to purchase a Skillcape for half price (only from Thurgo, not Elen) if you are wearing a Ring of Charos (a). Be aware that "Half price" is 92,000 Coins as the experience at level 92 is approximately half way to level 99.
